As you can see, UConn has not played Oklahoma since February, 2012. They had played four consecutive seasons before ending the series. Maybe Sheri saw the Stewart/Tuck/Jefferson years coming and didn't want to get creamed every time they played.

Overview

It's been a tough season so far for Sherri Coale and her Oklahoma Sooner team. They are an uncharacteristically 5-5 after ten games. After an opening game win against Belmont 96-73, they lost a tough OT game at DePaul 111-108, the only comparative score between UConn and Oklahoma. After a quick two game winning streak against SMU 87-75 and Colorado State 78-46 they went on a tough 4 game losing streak with losses to at the time No. 10 Oregon 92-74, Little Rock (BAD LOSS) 68-56 , Florida 80-61 and South Dakota State 67-61. Not exactly Murderer's Row.

The Sooners are on a two game winning steak though, and have a little more confidence coming into this game. They beat at the time No. 16 South Florida 79-74 and in their last game they hammered an overmatched New Mexico team 105-63 who was somehow undefeated at 11-0 coming into that contest.

Here is a highlight video from the Oklahoma win over South Florida. Just a quick look at some of their players.

UConn is coming off maybe their best performance of the season against DePaul winning 103-69. Before that they had an amazing comeback victory over Notre Dame winning 80-71.

Katie Lou sprained her ankle in the Notre Dame game. She missed almost all of the 4th quarter. Gabby Williams sat the entire second half in the ND game with migraines. But both played against DePaul and played well in extended minutes. With all this time off the entire team should be healthy including Batouly Camara, who finally hit the hardwood in the DePaul game showing flashes of her rebounding skills.

 Game Analysis

Oklahoma has had 8 of their nine players start at one time or another this season. Only Gabby Ortiz has started every game. So, basically, I have not clue who will start this game. I went with the players that started the last game they played. But everyone plays on this short nine player roster.

Oklahoma's offense is twofold. One, they look to take quite a few threes. They average 22 three point shots taken per game. The problem is that they only average 7 makes per game. Gabby Ortiz is the only player that makes a good percentage of her threes. She takes around 8 per game and makes half of them. The other two three point shooters are really struggling. Ana Lianusa take around 6 per game but only makes one and Maddie Manning, their 6th year grad student takes around 5 per game and only makes 1. Not good.

Two, they use their big 6'4" center, Vionise Pierre-Louis, who can really carve out space in the paint. She has decent post moves and pretty good hands. Backing her up is Ijeoma Odimgbe another 6'4" post. As with Pierre-Louise, her range is right around the basket. In watching some Oklahoma video it's clear that Pierre-Louise struggles getting up and down the court. Mostly she jogs. Not good when you play a running team like UConn.

Defensively, Oklahoma will mix things up. Sometimes a switching man-to-man similar to UConn and what looks to be a zone of some kind. Limited video for me to view. I can say this, neither one will be very effective against UConn.

The Huskies will take advantage of the slower Sooners by pressuring and running off turnovers as well as made baskets. Their speed and quickness is their big advantage. UConn will also take their share of threes. They average around 20 takes per game, but unlike Oklahoma, they hit them at a high rate, just over 40%.

Defensively, UConn will pressure and turn over the slower Sooners, totally disrupting Oklahoma's offense. The Huskies are just too quick on the defensive end.

Yeah, I know, not exactly rocket science here. The more talented team, the quicker and strong team, the faster and even bigger team will have it's way with their opponent. Nothing new here.

Final Prediction

There is only one comparable game between these two teams and that was against DePaul. Oklahoma lost in overtime to the Blue Demons 111-108 while UConn had an easy time in defeating DePaul 103-69. Now, I'm not a big fan of using comparable scores to predict outcomes, but these two games do tell us something.

This game could get out of hand quickly. It's not a good matchup for Sheri's minions. I expect UConn will push the lead and then give some back at the end, like they have for much of the season. Maybe this will be a game that the end of the bench plays a little better? I'm hopeful.

UConn by 40+.
