SHOOK, FUEHRING STEP UP FOR CARDS IN WIN
Normally, one wouldn't complain too much about a 19-point win over an ACC foe in February. And, that's what Louisville's women's basketball team accomplished Wednesday night against Clemson in front of a crowd of 7014 in the KFC YUM! Center. But, it wasn't the prettiest night of basketball and two players stepped up to have big games for Louisville. Two you wouldn't normally expect, in Sam Fuerhing and Kylee Shook.
Fuehring totaled 14 points in 26 minutes and Shook added 10 with two three-pointers in 23 minutes to push the Cards to 25-1 on the season and 11-1 in ACC play. They provided the spark for the somewhat sluggish at times Cards, who trailed 19-18 with just 4:41 left in the second quarter. Credit the Cards for closing out the quarter with a 14-2 run and going to halftime up 32-21 and credit Fuehring for scoring six straight for the Cards in that final stretch to take the Cards from a 20-19 lead to a 26-19 advantage in a mere minute and a half.
Also credit Clemson for playing with huge energy and very unlike a 1-11 conference team for the first 25 minutes of the game. They kept it close and battled Louisville on every possession for most of the first half. The Tigers had everything to gain and nothing to lose after five straight losses and had the majority of the fans in attendance frustrated with CU hanging around...among other things.
Louisville's play in the first 25 minutes... and the officiating frustrated Louisville coach Jeff Walz to the point of drawing a technical shortly before the 14-2 run. A foul called on Arica Carter was dubious at best and got the UofL coach involved in a heated discussion with the crew of Dee Kanter, Carla Fountain and Talisa Green. Coach said a few things that we can't repeat here and maybe it served to fire up the lethargic Cards. Coach was as upset as I've seen him in 11 years of covering him.The third quarter was played on pretty even terms, UofL failing to sink a three but winning the ten minutes 15-13 and shutting out the Tigers 4-0 after they climbed back to within nine at the 3:12 mark after a Aliyah Collier jumper capped a 5-0 Clemson run. Up 47-34 with ten minutes to go, one had to wonder if the Cards could win the final 10 minutes for once or if Collier, Thornton, Edwards would lead the Tigers on a run to challenge the #4 team in the country.
The visitors run never materialized.
Buoyed by two Shook threes, a Durr three plus two free throws and a nifty inside score from Myisha Hines-Allen... Louisville stretched the advantage out to 60-40 with the 13-6 run over the first six minutes of the fourth quarter and victory was secured.
But there was still more frustration.
A rather testy incident occurred during the run, Sam Fuehring swinging a wild elbow on a possession battle after missing a layup that got her a technical and a seat on the bench. The elbow didn't land and, as mentioned, it was out of frustration but Fuehring needs to watch those kind of things. Fuerhing later returned and her jumper gave the Cards their largest lead of the game at 64-42 with just 158 ticks left on the clock.
It wasn't the prettiest of wins for Louisville but, nevertheless...it was a win and the Cards get a few days off before travelling to Storrs, CT and a Monday night, out-of-conference matchup against #1 in the land UConn on ESPN 2. Frustrations aside, that should be a classic one if the Cards come to play.
THE FRED REPORT
FREE THROWS -- The Cards converted 16-22 attempts and Asia Durr was a perfect 6-6 from the line, part of her game-high 15 points. Despite Fuehring and Dunham going a combined 4-9 from the charity stripe, 72.7% meets the qualifications for a letter. The letter will be a small case "f", though...the Cards were averaging 75% going into the battle.REBOUNDING -- Although my colleagues Worldwide and Jared were lobbying for no letter here, Louisville did win the battle of the boards 36-30 and Shook grabbed 10 to complete her double-double. That's deserving of a small-case "r". Win...and you're in, in my book.
EFFORT/EXECUTION -- UofL was as sluggish as a mama bear coming out of hibernation in the first 25 minutes but picked it up after that. They won the points off turnover battle 19-7, points-in-the-paint 22-12, and had just 10 turnovers plus seven steals. I award
a small case "e" for the way they finished and for Shook, Fuehring, Jaz Jones and Durr's efforts.
DEFENSE -- Louisville held Clemson to just 46 points, 35.6% shooting, forced 17 turnovers and had seven steals. The runs that closed the second half and started the third quarter were impressive. I'll hand out the Capital "D" for the defense. Clemson averaged 52 points a game coming in and the Tigers just had one double figure scorer Wednesday night in Kobi Thornton, who ended with 13.
THE FRED VERDICT: f-r-e-D
So...in the final analysis, Louisville did what they were supposed to do in beating a lesser foe...but not in the blowout fashion that most expected. Clemson could easily be expected to throw in the towel after the ACC season they've had. They did not. The Cards were not focused to start the game, could not effect a fast and furious pace that Walz wanted and did not play especially well for significant stretches That will have to change before facing Connecticut.
