TRUMP'S DEAL "ART" IS ABOUT AS SOPHISTICATED AS FINGER PAINTING
President Trump is making a great show of being obnoxious toward the other members of the G-7:... President Donald Trump spent much of the week jabbing other world leaders, threatening to raise tariffs on U.S. allies and arguing that America would be better off if the conference didn't produce a new deal.On the other hand, there was this:
On Friday, he upped the ante just before heading to Canada: Russia, he said, should be allowed to rejoin the G-7....
He showed up late enough Friday that he had to reschedule one bilateral meeting and planned to leave early enough Saturday to miss G-7 sessions, leaving an aide to represent America in the final discussions.
President Donald Trump on Friday floated the idea of ending all tariffs and trade barriers between the U.S. and its G-7 allies — an unexpected pitch that comes amid a tit-for-tat trade war Trump recently launched....Trade is complex. This is a ridiculously simple-minded proposal. But it's conciliatory. Trump has been behaving as if he wants to fight all of America's allies, yet this seems like an olive branch.
“We should at least consider no tariffs, no barriers — scrapping all of it,” Trump said, according to officials who were listening and taking notes.
And that's pretty much all there is to Trump's "art of the deal." Step one: Repeatedly beat your chest while threatening the other guy. Step two: Once you think you've done that long enough, make nice. Subtle! Brilliant! Machiavellian!
It's the approach Trump took to Kim Jong-un: After threatening "Little Rocket Man" with "fire and fury" while boasting about the size and potency of his nuclear button, Trump leapt at the chance to have a summit. It's also what Trump seems to want to do with NFL players who protest police brutality, according to this CNN story, which didn't get much attention yesterday:
President Donald Trump said he wants to meet with NFL players and other athletes who kneel during the National Anthem so they can recommend people they think should be pardoned due to unfair treatment by the justice system....Granted, this happens only when Trump thinks an enemy can give him something he needs. North Korea and the rest of the G-7 can give Trump a foreign policy victory going into the midterms. The NFL players, Trump thinks, can win him some black votes in the midterms, or at least help him damp down black anti-Trump turnout. (Some strategist clearly has Trump fixated on this. There's no other explanation for the embrace of Kanye West and the pardons of Jack Johnson and Alice Johnson, as well as the talk about pardoning Muhammad Ali.)
"What I'm going to do is, I'm going to say to them instead of talk ... I am going to ask all of those people to recommend to me -- because that's what they're protesting -- people that they think were unfairly treated by the justice system," Trump said. "And I understand that."
And yes, the pattern does resemble the way abusers sometimes buy flowers or gifts after a beating. In any case, it's not subtle, or artful.
