Louisville Fall Sports Media Day -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FIELD HOCKEY, WOMEN'S SOCCER, VOLLEYBALL and CROSS COUNTRY MEET THE PRESS

A good afternoon and different format for the annual Fall Sports Media Preview Day for four UofL sports. The venue was the same...the Lynn Stadium office space and locker rooms in the interview room...but this year the assistant S.I.D.'s decided to present the sports one at a time with both coaches and players at the interview table... instead of having all the coaches go first and then allowing the media to question the players in a separate room next door...as in previous years.

I'm still deciding whether I like this new format or not. Let's get back to that at the end of today's article. I was the second media representative to arrive for the interviews and Worldwide Jeff McAdams the third...the vast majority of media that would eventually attend were still over at a football press conference that ran long

Nice planning, Rocco.

Eventually the rest of the media came in and things got started -- albeit a bit late.

Justine Sowry started the afternoon with Field Hockey players Taylor Stone and Katie Walsh. The early part of the appearance centered around the feats of field hockey goalkeeper Ayeshia McFerran and her World Cup performance with Ireland. McFerran is due back stateside this weekend, from all accounts. She spent some time in Ireland after the Irish Green Army took second place in the World Cup -- making appearances with the squad and coaches celebrating the heroes.

Sowry, who was England to watch the games, related various stories of how businesses in Ireland were naming products, food and drinks in honor of the Irish players. I wonder if there was a McFerran Muffin at the bakeries?

Sowry and the players answered questions on a variety of topics. To hear the complete interview, go to the link below:

Next up was Louisville Volleyball with head coach Dani Busboom Kelly and players Molly Sauer, Jasmine Bennett and Wilma Rivera. After a few opening remarks by Busboom-Kelly, questions evolved around the past season, summer accomplishment of a few of the players and Rivera's award (Best Setter in the ACC).

The player and Coach Dani share the same optimism the the 2018 season will be even better than the 2017 season...Busboom Kelly's first as the head coach. There was also discussion of the move to Cardinal Arena from the KFC YUM! Center and other player observations on various subjects. You can hear the entire session at the link below.

Third on the docket came the Louisville women's soccer contingent with head coach Karen Ferguson Dayes and players "Gabby squared" -- Gabby Kouzelos, Gabriella Vincent plus Emina Ekic. Questions were answered on the large amount of freshmen on the 2018 roster, the loss due to graduation of several key players and who might fill there roles in 2018 and a great interchange when the "Gabby's" were asked how they differentiated themselves on the field since they have the same name. (Spoiler alert...Vincent goes by "G" and Kouzelos is known as "keeper"...since she is the goalkeeper).

Discussions followed on Ekic's awards, the schedule and other items. You can join in on the fun at the link below:

Cross Country ended the presentations and head coach Dale Cowper brought a student-athlete from each squad (men and women's). From Kenya, Dorcas Wasike talked about why she chose Louisville, her motivation for running and accomplishments she has earned. Daniel Fleace covered the same areas and discussed the "Southern Indiana" collection (he's from Ramsey, IN) on the team...three of the ten runners hail from "the sunny side" of Louisville.

All in all, a good day to learn about the sports ahead. Now, the critique:

As usual, "some" media members hog the questioning and take 30 seconds to ask a simple question or rapid-fire several questions in a row. They, of course, have a higher self-importance and are superior to us knuckleheads at CARDINAL COUPLE...and in some cases, it may be their only interactions with some of the sports during the season.

I do miss the "breakout session" with the players -- you got a chance to talk to them more on a one-on-one basis and didn't have to be "Quick Draw McGraw" to get a question in. Some of out best interviews came from those sessions in past years.  There was less of a feeling of being at a thoroughbred sale and horses being brought in for a show and eventual sale and then hustled back to the barn in the old format.

I do like the way women's basketball still (I hope) does it...where you get the players and coach of the team seperately. At least, that's how it went last year.

I do get and understand why the S.I.D.'s enacted the changes, though. A more concise and centered presentation for the TV folks and a quicker afternoon. Sports information provided in a cliff-notes format. If the format is here to stay, we'll adapt and evolve...after all, it was an experiment.  An experiment neatly packaged and formatted for maximum effect and minimum time.

And maybe I'm the only one who feels this way about the new approach, who knows? No one ever accused me or Cardinal Couple, though, of falling in and marching uniformly with the rest of the media. Maybe it's why we're still independent and happy to give you more women's athletic coverage than most.

We'll see you at the games and matches.
