MAYMOUNT IN FINAL
Maymount Celtic’s Under 17 side are fast earning a reputation as  the comeback kids of Cork soccer. They followed their sensational FAI Cup quarter-final revival, 3-1 down to Corbally with a few minutes to go, with another heat-warming turnaround at the Cross last Sunday by coming from two down after 14 minutes to defeat a highly rated Sligo Rovers side 3-2.

No wonder club spokesman Chalky Murphy feels they can go on and win the trophy: “Having come back from the dead in the last two games, we feel our name might well be on that cup. But we started very bad against Sligo and were lucky no to go three down”.

Luckily for the Cork side, they managed to hold it at two. Assistant manager Shane O’Neill settled them down at half-time, told them to play their own game. Their own game, plus a lot of heart and little luck, gave them a deserved victory in the end and a  place in the final against Wembley Rovers of Limerick.

Team management were obviously delighted with the performance, singling out Jamie Meehan (he netted the winner), play-maker Ian Cullinane and sub Gary Kerrigan (the only 17 year old in the side), who made a major contribution after his introduction in the second half, unlucky to be denied by a fantastic save from the Sligo keeper.

Maymount secretary Murphy: “They all did well. I thought that Sligo had some excellent players, particularly defender Sean Kelly and midfielder Jason McCartney”. Significantly, McCartney missed out on extra time because of injury.
